چکیده

A technique is presented for measuring velocity, density and scalar transport in a buoyant rotating gravity current. Existing methods for combined PIV and PLIF are modified for use in a stratified flow on a rotating table and strategies for beam alignment, index of refraction matching, surface tension matching and photobleaching correction are presented. In addition, the PIV–PLIF technique is modified to resolve the velocity and density fields in a cross-section of the current perpendicular to the mean flow direction, allowing the transport in this direction to be computed. This is done by rotating the plane of the laser sheet 15 to the horizontal. This sheet angle is high enough that the entire cross-section of the current is contained in the viewing area, but low enough that horizontal PIV particle displacements are resolved. The technique is used successfully to measure the transport of buoyant fluid in a non-rotating channel to within 5% of the prescribed flow. Results from a rotating gravity current experiment are then presented and compared with previous experiments.

Vertical boil propagation from a submerged estuarine sill

[1] Surface disruptions by boils during strong tidal flows over a rocky sill were observed in thermal infrared imagery collected at the Snohomish River estuary in Washington State. Locations of boil disruptions and boil diameters at the surface were quantified and are used to test an idealized model of vertical boil propagation. The model is developed as a two-dimensional approximation of a thr...

Laboratory experiments simulating a coastal river inflow

The dynamics of buoyant water entering a rotating basin are studied using a series of laboratory experiments designed to elucidate the alongshore transport mechanisms in river plumes. Inflowing water, which is discharged perpendicular to the tank wall, is observed to form a growing anticyclonic bulge and a coastal current downstream of the bulge. Detailed simultaneous measurements of the veloci...

The Role of Thermal Conduction in Accretion Disks with Outflows

In this work we solve the set of hydrodynamical equations for accretion disks in the spherical coordinates (r,θ,ϕ) to obtain the explicit structure along θ direction. We study a two-dimensional advective accretion disc in the presence of thermal conduction. We find self-similar solutions for an axisymmetric, rotating, steady, viscous-resistive disk. We show that the global structure of an advec...

Remote Sensing and Modeling of Coherent Structures

LONG-TERM GOALS The long-term goals of this research are to combine state-of-the-art remote sensing and in situ measurements with advanced numerical modeling (a) to characterize coherent structures in river and estuarine flows and (b) to determine the extent to which their remotely sensed signatures can be used to initialize and guide predictive models. OBJECTIVES Coherent structures are genera...

A General Model for the Helical Structure of Geophysical Flows in Channel Bends

Meandering channels formed by geophysical flows (e.g., rivers and seafloor turbidity currents) include the most extensive sediment transport systems on Earth. Previous measurements from rivers show how helical flow at meander bends plays a key role in sediment transport and deposition. Turbidity currents differ from rivers in both density and velocity profiles. These differences, and the lack o...
